"CHIPS: Baseband accelerator merges WiMax, LTE"

Freescale Semiconductor has unveiled a baseband accelerator chip for both WiMax and LTE (Long Term Evolution) wireless 4G network basestations. By supporting both emerging standards, Freescale (Austin, Texas) said its new chip enables wireless carriers to create universal basestations with differentiated channel cards that deliver data rates at 100 Mbits/s and higher. Touted as the industry's first multistandard baseband accelerator device, Freescale's chip also supports new Turbo and Viterbi decoding standards along with 2G and 3G wireless networks. The chip also contains two configurable RISC engines, which can be reprogrammed for future wireless standards and security algorithms. It also has two high- speed serial interfaces that can support up to eight lanes at over 3 Gbits/s.Text: http://www.eetimes.com/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=208800460
