RT NXP Edges Out ST to lead Infotainment Pack

NXP has pioneered itself into the #1 position in infotainment, according to iSuppli. When NXP spun off of Philips everybody wondered if it would be the beginning of the end, or a new beginning--now we know. Look for NXP to keep making big splashes in electronics. R.C.J.

Here's what iSuppli says: NXP Semiconductors in 2009 took the top position in the global automotive infotainment semiconductor market, the first time the company has held the top spot since iSuppli Corp. began tracking the area in 2005. NXP in 2009 posted automotive infotainment semiconductor revenue of $291 million. While this total was down 24.8 percent from $387 million in 2008, No. 2 STMicroelectronics also saw a significant fall in its revenue, declining by 37.4 percent if compared to 2008. As a result, NXP was able to displace STMicroelectronics as the world’s leading infotainment chip supplier. NXP’s share of the global market for infotainment semis amounted to 11.5 percent in 2009, while STMicroelectronics accounted for 10.9 percent. Maintaining its No. 3 position was Panasonic Corp. with revenue of $193 million, down 36.3 percent year-on-year, while Renesas Technology Corp. stayed in the No. 4 slot with revenue of $191 million...
